Challenges Of Single Parent Homeschooling
54
Being a single parent is a challenge in itself. You are the sole bread-earner of
the family and in addition you have to take care of all other family necessities
including caring for your children. As such, many single parents believe that
homeschooling is not the right option for them. They are afraid that they will
not be able to provide any time for their children amidst having to provide
basic support for their family, managing a career and finding some time for
themselves.
However, the biggest advantage of homeschooling is that you
can do it at a time and pace that is convenient for you. In fact, you may find
that compared to the pressures of regular schooling and having to attend various
activities and support other requests, homeschooling has far less pressures.
Further, if you do the calculation and compare the number of regular school
hours your child goes through and the number of hours you can spare over
weekends, you will find that you have more than enough time to manage
homeschooling for your children.
Let us take a quick look at how you can
manage your career and homeschooling as a single parent more efficiently.
First of all, you should learn to delegate some of the educational and
household responsibilities to your children. They should be requested to do some
things on their own when you are not around. They can certainly manage their
reading work, work on projects that involve art work or building models and so
on. If your child is young and has a babysitter, forbid her from showing the
child any TV. Instead they can do something creative like garden together or
bake together. Older kids can certainly help you in the housework. Teens can
even have dinner ready by the time you come home from work.
One of the
most important things that any homeschooling parent can do is to plan studies
well ahead of time. This not only makes it easier to know when some extra time
may be needed for an outdoor activity or an excursion and when children can sit
at home and work on their own. Children also find it easier to work when there
is a clear schedule ahead of them. In fact, you can even make them part of your
planning process so that they learn time management skills from a young age and
have a sense of control over their education.
Finally, when a single
parent is homeschooling, there is always a danger that when the parent is at
home, all they do with the children is schoolwork. You should make sure that you
also spend time with the children doing some fun activities so that you maintain
your connection with the children. Another suggestion would be to take your
children with you someday to your office so that they can see what you are doing
and why it is important. This will not only give them an idea of the working
world but also a sense of connection with you.
