Tips for the Homeschooling Parent
57
If you have decided to homeschool your children, you would have done so after a
lot of research and a whole lot of thinking. While you are confident that your
children will do much better with homeschooling, it is natural for you to feel a
little overwhelmed with all the preparation that you have to do, to homeschool
your children. You have to be well prepared, keep things fairly structured, and
stay organized.
In fact, one of the most important lessons you can give
your homeschooled children is that they can use their time far more effectively,
only if they learn to stay organized. Here are some quick tips on how best to
homeschool children.
* Mark certain spaces for specific activities. For
example, working in the playroom is not such a good idea since the kids will
always be reminded of playtime. It is best to find some exclusive space where
you can put a table, chair, a computer if needed and areas for math activities,
science activities and so on. While even a large corner should suffice for this
purpose, if you do not have even that, you could divide the playroom into two
different sections, one for play and one for work. In the work area, you could
create separate sections like a reading area, science center and math center.
This makes it easier to put things away when you are done and also helps reduce
boredom by being able to move from one area to one another, instead of having to
constantly sit in one room.
* You should always find places to store
everything that is essential. Once you have decided which one is the work area
for the children, you could find places for the science stuff and for the other
reading materials and so on. This way, when you are done with studies for the
day, your children can easily put back everything in their respective places.
When you begin the next day, you will be able to start fresh with a neat,
organized work area.
* Even if you are homeschooling, having a schedule is
very important. You should make sure that there is time for all kinds of
activities, including lunch or snack breaks. If kids do not eat at appropriate
times, they will be hungry and then be distracted from their work. Of course,
having a schedule does not mean that it has to be followed rigidly at all times.
If once in a while, your children want to do something different, it is okay to
forget the schedule. However, on a daily basis, it is best to follow the
schedule so that work gets done on time.
* While homeschooling, there is
always a tendency on the part of parents to try and do too much. This will
certainly not benefit the child; in fact, even if you take up a little at a time
and do that well, it will turn out to be far more beneficial to the child.
